Comparison of Platos The Last Days of Socrates and Hesses Siddhartha The Last Days of Socrates and Siddhartha are sources that reveal information about religious or philosophical ideas in the cultures that they focus on. While vast differences exist between the Greek and Indian values that shape their philosophies, they make similar assumptions as they attempt to make sense of the world. Understanding the dichotomous relationship of the soul and the body is integral to grasping the similarities and differences between the classical Greek and Indian paths because the way in which these concepts are understood defines the very nature of truth. (Plato 62). He bases his arguments in an understanding that people can only be wise when their souls are free from their bodies, because the senses interfere with inquiry (Plato 131). Socrates admits, however, that throughout life the body and the soul are connected. They only separate at death, which he explains as ...the separate condition by itself of the soul when released from the body (Plato 108). Based on this assumption, Socrates encourages people to give up bodily pleasures such as food, sex, and fancy clothes so that their souls can be as free as possible from their sensual bodies (Plato 108). Siddhartha uses the term Self to express the concept of the soul and the body . In order to free himself of the influences of the body on his soul, Siddhartha attempts ...to become empty, to become empty of thirst, desire, dreams, pleasure, and sorrow-to let the Self die (Hesse 14). However, he too finds it impossible to completely separate the soul and the body so that he can discover truth. A person really only falls in love once. Following someone so blindly, not another care in the world but that special someone. Spinning and spinning, falling toward the only thing in focus, everything else blurred by the spin. The security of that clear image can do no wrong. Falling, whether in slow motion or at high speed, until finding oneself swept into a perpetual fall, hopelessly in love with whoever the heart picks, not remembering how one had gotten there, and to not care, because all that is known is bliss. However unfortunate th ese effects may seem at the time, they give a warm glow, healthy color, and extra shine, all in an effort to look more appealing. The pupils dilate, taking in everything it can of the potential mate (Alberts). As more adrenaline, testosterone, and estrogen are released throughout this first meeting, the body remembers these exhilarating feelings. The dopamine activates the bodys reward system, reminding it where it can get more of these chemicals that it is beginning to crave (Bozarth). After a relationship begins, feelings move beyond initial attraction and enter the love bubble. It is that perpetual fall of being hopelessly in love. The brains perfect combination for the perfect, unpoppable bubble: norepinephrine, adrenaline, phenylethylamine, endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. The norepinephrine heightens attention, stimulates the production of adrenaline, and promotes goal oriented behavior (Smiga). Moreover, Mr. X was going to get promotion but his promotion was delayed two times for certain reasons. He misses his parents as he used to live with his parents since childhood. His parents visit him occasionally, but he feels very low whenever they leave him. Mr. X and his wife both spent time with each other on weekends and always have dinner together. However, as his wife has her office in early hours of the day, on weekdays she seems to be very busy and doesnt have quality time with his husband. Though, whenever her husband doesnt feel well, she takes a leave from her office and goes to the hospital togethe r. According to the model, the stressor in the family is a separation of Mr. X from his family, delay in his promotion for two times, and insufficient quality time with his wife. The strengths of the family are support for each other, spending time on weekends, having dinner together, trust, and adequate income. Through this model, the strengths and stressors are understood, and will be used for overcoming the stress of the family and health of Mr. X. Hence, with the help of this model, a structured approach towards the assessment of the family and intervention is achieved. The focus on strengths of the family is the unique approach of this model.
